Kia’palano

Capilano Suspension Bridge Park is located on the unceded traditional territories of the Skwxwú7mesh Nation and Tsleil-Waututh Nation, and the park’s connection to their stories is an important part of understanding Indigenous culture in Vancouver. At Kia’palano, the park’s education cultural centre, visitors can explore the tradition of placing totem (story) poles and learn how these carvings reflect history, identity, and the deep cultural significance of this place.

Fun Facts

Story Tellers

Many of the story poles (commonly called totem poles) in the Park were designed and carved by notable Indigenous carvers Wayne Carlick, of the Tlingit/Taltan Nation, and James Lewis of the Tsimshian Nation.

Millennial Wishes

Just before the turn of the millennium, we invited guests to sign a wish book, which was placed into a bentwood box and embedded inside our Millennium pole, raised on June 21, 2000.

A History Spanning Millennia

Kia’palano is an educational centre dedicated to sharing the rich culture, traditions, and stories of the First Nations people who have long called this land home. Through interpretive displays, totem (story) poles, and cultural teachings, the centre highlights the deep connection between the Skwxwú7mesh and Tsleil-Waututh peoples and the land where Capilano Suspension Bridge Park now stands. Visitors can explore the meaning behind traditional carvings, learn about the history of the region, and gain a deeper understanding of the enduring relationship between Indigenous communities and the surrounding rainforest.
